Misinformation Fuels Mwanza Cholera Outbreak as Residents Drink Chlorine

Sunday, April 12, 2026

A cholera outbreak in Mwanza District is being worsened by misinformation, with some residents drinking chlorine in a misguided attempt to cure the disease, according to the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation. Local families, who often rely on untreated stream water due to a lack of nearby boreholes, have mistakenly consumed the water purification chemical after experiencing severe diarrhea and vomiting.

Environmental health officers at Mwanza District Hospital attribute the local surge in cases to poor sanitation and a lack of accurate health information, noting that many affected households lack pit latrines, the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation reports. In response, health teams have been deployed to the area to collect water samples, distribute proper hygiene materials, and conduct civic education campaigns.

Malawi Health Equity Network Executive Director George Jobe warned the public against consuming chlorine, emphasizing that the practice poses severe medical risks and can lead to death, according to the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation. While community transmission is occurring, health officials note that the majority of Mwanza's recent cholera cases are linked to cross-border infections from neighbouring Mozambique.
