According to Nation Online, authorities in Karonga District are investigating the Coal and Minerals Group after a viral video showed black, coal-contaminated water flowing into local rivers. Preliminary field tests conducted by the National Water Resources Authority confirm that the Kasantha, Changwina, and Kafulu rivers have been polluted with toxic acids from coal residues.

Officials discovered the mining operation lacked an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment and formal water certification. The findings have raised alarms about the potential threat to public health and the nearby Lake Malawi ecosystem.
