Former Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera has officially commenced his diplomatic mission to Tanzania as the Special Envoy of the Commonwealth Secretary-General, according to The Citizen. Arriving in Dar es Salaam on April 8, Chakwera met with Tanzania's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, to initiate a series of engagements aimed at advancing national reconciliation and political dialogue following Tanzania's 2025 elections. The Commonwealth mandate will see Chakwera consulting with government officials, civil society groups, and political leaders to promote regional stability.

At the United Nations, Malawi is co-facilitating international sustainable development policies. According to UN Habitat, Malawi's Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr. Agnes Chimbiri-Molande, alongside her Polish counterpart, set an April 10 deadline for stakeholders to submit written inputs for the 2026 High-level Meeting of the UN General Assembly on the New Urban Agenda. The submissions will inform a formal political declaration on global urban planning and multilateral cooperation.

Update: International aid constraints continue to pressure domestic development programmes. The United Nations World Food Programme warned of immediate funding gaps for nutrition assistance, according to America Magazine. The ongoing shortfall follows previous reductions in United States overseas assistance that have heavily impacted health and humanitarian projects across Malawi and other African nations.

In regional diplomacy, the Southern African Development Community continued its economic integration efforts as Egypt's new ambassador, Ahmad Sharif, presented his letters of credence to SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi, according to the SADC Secretariat. The April 8 meeting reaffirmed commitments to the Tripartite Free Trade Area, which connects SADC, COMESA, and the East African Community to improve market access for member states like Malawi.
