The Likoma District Council has partnered with StrokeAfrica.org to combat the growing burden of stroke in the island district, according to the Nyasa Times. The initiative aims to improve awareness, early detection, and community response by providing health workers and residents with educational materials on stroke prevention. With St Peter's Hospital serving as the primary referral facility, local health officials noted that the collaboration will help overcome geographical barriers to specialized medical information and care.

Update: The Parliamentary Committee on Health officially commenced hearings on October 12 to investigate the theft of government drugs and the circulation of falsified medicines, reports Malawi24. The inquiry, which runs until October 16, will question officials from the Malawi Revenue Authority and several pharmaceutical companies, including Victoria Pharmaceuticals and Crown Pharmaceuticals, regarding the safety, quality, and handling of medicines nationwide.

In other news, health experts used recent World Mental Health Day commemorations in Mzuzu to advocate for more inclusive care. According to the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, Dr. Charles Masulani, Chief Executive Officer of St John of God Hospitaller Services Malawi, urged communities to reduce stigma by actively involving individuals with lived mental health experiences in decision-making. Meanwhile, The Eastleigh Voice reports that Malawi Airlines has issued a travel advisory requiring all passengers visiting Kenya for less than 12 months to obtain mandatory inbound travel health insurance, in compliance with new Kenyan aviation directives.
