Update: Following earlier reports of registration delays, the Tobacco Commission has officially extended its field licensing and Know Your Grower registration exercise to October 17, according to Nyasa Times. Originally scheduled to conclude on October 3, the deadline was pushed back to accommodate a high turnout of farmers. As of October 12, more than 49,000 of the country's estimated 191,000 tobacco growers had completed the process. Tobacco Commission board chair Reverend Daniel Gunya stated that additional personnel have been deployed to high-volume areas, such as Kasungu, to manage demand and resolve the staffing shortages that previously slowed operations.

Update: Building on earlier coverage of government-backed biogas initiatives, the Malawi Dairy Biogas Program has officially launched to assist farming households with clean energy and livestock waste management. The project, implemented by EcoGen Malawi and Sistema.bio, marks the first authorised activity under the Article 6.2 bilateral climate agreement between Malawi and Switzerland. Deputy Minister of Natural Resources Chipiliro Mpinganjira attended the recent launch event, which demonstrated how biodigesters can help rural farmers cut cooking expenses while improving farm hygiene and agricultural waste practices.

In international developments affecting the sector, the World Bank Group has launched a new Philanthropy Hub at its 2026 Annual Meetings to increase funding for agricultural productivity, healthcare, and water access. According to Agrifocus Africa, the platform is designed to connect private-sector partners and philanthropic foundations with development initiatives that require financial and technical support. World Bank Group Managing Director Paschal Donohoe noted that these partnerships are becoming necessary as development needs grow and public finances remain constrained.
