The Parliamentary Committee on Health commenced hearings on October 12 to investigate drug theft, falsified medicines, and substandard medical products in the country, according to Malawi24. The inquiry, which is scheduled to run until October 16, will summon representatives from pharmaceutical companies and the Malawi Revenue Authority to address issues surrounding the handling and quality of medical supplies. Companies including Victoria Pharmaceuticals Industry Limited and Crown Pharmaceuticals and Research Laboratories Limited were scheduled to testify before the committee. However, local news outlets reported that the Managing Director of Victoria Pharmaceuticals was turned away on Tuesday for arriving unprepared and was ordered to return on Friday.

Update: Building on earlier reports of emergency health preparedness, the World Health Organization and the Malawi Government officially opened a five-day regional training programme in Lilongwe on October 12. According to the WHO Regional Office for Africa, the sessions focus on the Minimum Initial Service Package for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Emergencies. Participants from Malawi, Botswana, Lesotho, Eritrea, and Eswatini have convened to improve the coordination of essential reproductive health services. The programme specifically aims to protect vulnerable women and girls and prevent maternal and newborn deaths during humanitarian crises.
