According to Nation Online, the World Bank's Africa Economic Update for October 2026 indicates that Malawi's efforts to restructure its external debt have stalled. The institution listed Malawi among African countries facing severe debt vulnerabilities, noting that a lack of creditor coordination and the absence of sustained International Monetary Fund engagement have complicated debt talks. Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Joseph Mwanamvekha acknowledged the heavy debt burden, while the World Bank emphasized that major reforms are required to place public finances on a sustainable path.

In related financial news, the Economics Association of Malawi has cautioned the government and central bank against premature policy easing, Nation Online reports. The association advised against lowering interest rates too early as the country continues to navigate inflation pressures and general economic instability.

Additionally, the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace released a performance assessment of President Peter Mutharika's first year in office, according to AfricaBrief. The commission awarded the administration a rating of 3.75 out of six. While the report noted improvements in food security and local government financing, it criticized the government's handling of the economy. The assessment specifically pointed to unresolved foreign exchange shortages, fuel scarcity, and the high cost of living as major ongoing challenges for Malawian households and businesses.
