On October 8, the Reserve Bank of Malawi hosted a Southern African Development Community (SADC) financial conference at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe. According to Yoneco FM, the event aimed to break barriers within the region's financial systems by focusing on digital finance, virtual assets, cybersecurity in the non-bank financial sector, and the expansion of agricultural credit. The discussions formed part of the 49th annual general meeting of the SADC Committee of Insurance, Securities and Non-Banking Financial Authorities.
In a separate partnership, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Standard Bank unveiled the 2026 Malawi Creative Economy and Investment Forum on Friday. A UNDP press release confirmed the forum is scheduled for late November in Lilongwe and will connect Malawian artists and entrepreneurs with international investors. The project seeks to address persistent challenges in the creative sector, including weak distribution networks and limited access to finance.
International donors are also assisting Malawi's public service delivery systems. On Saturday, the UNDP announced the handover of 152 printers to the National Registration Bureau. The equipment was funded by the European Union, Irish Aid, and the Royal Norwegian Embassy. According to the UNDP, 100 printers will be distributed to Traditional Authority offices and 52 to health facilities, allowing citizens to access birth and death registration services without travelling long distances.
On the regional diplomacy front, preparations are underway for the inaugural International Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience in Africa, which begins in Maputo, Mozambique, on October 13. According to a SADC Secretariat statement issued on Saturday, the African Union convened the summit to bring together policymakers, financial institutions, and development partners from member states, including Malawi, to improve investments in climate resilience and disaster risk management.
