The University of Malawi (UNIMA) has reclaimed its position as the top university in the country, according to the 2026 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings and the Centre for World University Rankings. Published reports on June 26 indicate that the recognition marks a major achievement for the institution, which surpassed the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) after LUANAR held the top spot last year. According to Face of Malawi, UNIMA Vice-Chancellor Professor Samson Sajidu stated that the dual rankings reflect the university's ongoing commitment to delivering quality higher education.
In early childhood development, Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Mary Navicha has called for increased national investment in early education. Speaking in Lilongwe at the Stakeholder Consultative Workshop for the Federer Foundation Malawi Country Strategy Implementation Plan, Navicha emphasised that early learning and proper care environments ensure children are better prepared to progress through the primary and secondary education systems, MBC Online reports.
Meanwhile, efforts to expand primary education access in rural areas continue as a new school is scheduled to break ground on June 29 in Chiosya Village, Ntchisi District. The construction, funded by the international charity Team Dayā, will provide classrooms for early grade learners. According to the organisation, the project aims to eliminate the five-kilometre walk to the nearest existing school for children in the agricultural community.
