Malawi's Minister of Health, Madalitso Baloyi, joined global leaders at the 2026 United Nations High-Level Meeting on HIV and AIDS in New York on June 23, where member states adopted a new Political Declaration to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. According to UNAIDS, Baloyi addressed the assembly following the resolution's adoption, stating, "The challenge now is to sustain investment, strengthen partnerships and deliver results for people."

In related global health finance news, a recent Kaiser Family Foundation analysis highlighted in a June 25 update by the George W. Bush Presidential Center indicates that donor transitions could impact bilateral health assistance. The report notes that 29 countries with bilateral agreements, including Malawi, face a combined $4.3 billion reduction in support from the United States and the Global Fund as international health organisations approach their 2030 targets.

Update: Following earlier reports of a nationwide drop in malaria infections, the National Malaria Control Programme released new data showing cases fell from 2.4 million in the first half of 2025 to 1.8 million during the same period in 2026. Nyasa Times reports that Programme Manager Dr. Lumbani Munthali credited the decline to the widespread distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets and heightened public awareness campaigns. To further control the disease, the programme has partnered with the Ministry of Education to improve student access to malaria diagnosis and treatment facilities.
